How to Develop an SEO Strategy for No Cost – Part 2
On Page SEO
Once you have your keyword research, it is time to move on to the next phase of the strategy. This is the part where you will need an idea of how to update your website. If you are using a content management system like WordPress, it will be MUCH easier for you. I recommend using this platform as it is easy to manage and SEO friendly. You can install a plugin such as WordPress SEO, or All in one SEO and it will guide you through what you need to do. For the most part, here are the elements you will need to update for your On Page SEO:
- Page titles
- Meta description
- Meta keywords
- H1 tags and other subheading tags
- Image alt tags
- Keywords in the content
- URL structure to include primary keyword phrase
- Inner linking to subpages using keywords
Because this is an SEO lesson and not an HTML lesson, I would recommend learning some of the basics of HTML in order to make these changes correctly.
Search Engine Submission
Once the entire website is optimized as needed, it is time to create a sitemap. Again, WordPress plugins have been created to handle this for you such as Google XML Sitemaps. That said, if your website is not on WordPress there are some easy tools out there to help you build sitemaps. http://www.web-site-map.com is one such tool. You simply enter your URL and it will create the sitemap for you. Larger websites (over 4,000 pages) may better be served using another platform.
Once you have the sitemap created and saved as sitemap.xml, then it is time to get it submitted to search engines. You really just need to worry about submitting to Bing (which now owns Yahoo search), and Google.
Once you register for these, and go to submit your website, you will need to prove you have access. Easiest way is to just upload a file to your server. Otherwise, you just have to add a meta tag to the heading of your home page and you are good to go. This tells the search engines your site is ready to be indexed and is important so they know to come visit your site and learn what it is about.
